SUMMARY:Cypurr Session A Real Kick in the KOSA
URL;VALUE=URI:- https://www.bklynlibrary.org/calendar/cypurr-session-real-k
 ick-central-library-info-20260117-0300pm
DESCRIPTION:For this session\, we'll take a dive into the rash of online sa
fety bills that have been the talk of the internet lately (i.e. the Kids O
nline Safety Act [KOSA] and the like)\, and discuss how they affect folks
of all different backgrounds. Bills like this will allow for the implement
ation of a slew of technologies meant to verify ages of users\, including
tools like ID checks\, biometric scans\, or other age estimation methods.
Per the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)\, "Governments in the U.S. an
d around the world are increasingly adopting these restrictive measures in
the name of protecting children online. But in practice\, these systems c
reate dangerous new forms of surveillance\, censorship\, and exclusion."\n
\nCome by to learn more on this issue and discuss with the CyPurr folk. \n
\nSpecial Guest Speaker: EFF's Civil Liberties Director David Green.\n\nDa
vid Greene\, Senior Staff Attorney and Civil Liberties Director\, has sign
ificant experience litigating First Amendment issues in state and federal
trial and appellate courts. David currently serves on the steering committ
ee of the Free Expression Network\, the governing committee of the ABA For
um on Communications Law\, and on advisory boards for several arts and fre
e speech organizations across the country. He has written and lectured ext
ensively on many areas of First Amendment Law\, including as a contributor
to the International Encyclopedia of Censorship. Before joining EFF\, Dav
id was for twelve years the Executive Director and Lead Staff Counsel for
First Amendment Project\, where he worked with EFF on numerous cases inclu
ding Bunner v. DVDCCA. David also previously served as program director of
the National Campaign for Freedom of Expression where he was the principa
l contributor and general editor of the NCFE Quarterly and the principal a
uthor of the NCFE Handbook to Understanding\, Preparing for and Responding
to Challenges to your Freedom of Artistic Expression.\n\n

 -matinee-2-1-26
DESCRIPTION:For this month’s journey into tech-cinema\, we’re taking a
break from our usual 1995-cyberpunk-ethos to screen Seeking Mavis Beacon (
2024\, dir by Jazmine Jones)\, a film which “investigates the disappeara
nce and reexamines the legacy of one of the most influential Black women i
n technology.” Sitting at the intersection of technology and race\, this
documentary questions the simultaneous commodification and erasure of Bla
ck people in tech spaces\, a topic that is as relevant as ever with the ex
ploitation of Black avatars in the age of AI.

DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we will be talking about landlord tech\, how
it exacerbates housing injustice\, and what rights tenants have to protect
themselves. Landlord tech\, also referred to as property or prop tech\, r
efers to a range of tools used by the real estate industry across the tena
ncy lifecycle. Examples of landlord tech include closed-circuit television
(CCTV) cameras\, facial recognition technologies\, access control applica
tions\, digital payment and tenant screening platforms and other “smart
building” software. We will discuss how biometric data collection\, algo
rithmic decision-making\, and surveillance practices embedded in landlord
tech place many tenants in the path of extractive data mechanisms and enab
le unfair housing practices.\n\nThis event will also feature a Q + A from
the Ridgewood Tenants Union discussing tenants rights and organizing in yo
ur building. See their info below:\n\nThe Ridgewood Tenants Union is an al
 l-volunteer and tenant-led anti-gentrification group working together to g
row the power of working-class tenants and unhoused people in Ridgewood\,
Maspeth\, Glendale\, and Middle Village. Founded in 2014 and demanding saf
e and stable housing for all\, they organize together to fight displacemen
t.\n\nSpecial Speaker: Paula Garcia-Salazar\, Staff Attorney at the Legal
Aid Society\n\nRecommended Reading and Resources:\n\n “Landlord Techn
ologies of Gentrification: Facial Recognition and Building Access Technolo
gies in New York City Homes”\n Landlord Tech Watch
